In Trinidad and Tobago I once performed in a stadium at a Carnivale comedy festival. I also perform at the Calgary Comedy Festival every year. Comedy festivals are fantastic. They can be a scam, with organizers putting all their friends in the lineup and then sending out mass emails all over the world saying “Come to the Boston Comedy Festival and perform! Send us $35 and we’ll look at your tape.” They have thousands of comedians pay $35 to audition. Then you have to fly yourself there, put yourself up, pay for your own meals, and perform for nothing.

However, they can be a great way to meet and network with other comedians in the very beginning. And there are some legitimate prizes. A lot of them pay $25,000 to the most popular comedian. I would highly recommend comedy festivals for people starting out. While flying yourself to one may not be a good investment, it’s probably a good idea to check out local festivals — even if you don’t win.

Comedy festivals are a great way to get lots of exposure, meet fellow comedians, and get your foot in the proverbial comedy door. If you are traveling abroad, these festivals can be a great opportunity to immerse yourself and learn from fellow comedians.
